Somerset’s Max Waller has announced his retirement from all forms of the game. The cricketer, who made his competitive debut in 2007, virtually spent his entire professional career at the club.

Waller retired as Somerset’s all-time highest wicket-taker in T20s, collecting 139 wickets from the 144 matches he played.

Waller thanks Somerset for glittering career

On Friday, September 16, the 34-year-old penned an open letter for his fans on social media. The right-arm spinner credited Somerset and described some of his experiences at the cricket club. He said:

“I've tried to enjoy every moment playing in front of a fantastic crowd at Taunton, other brilliant venues around the country and across the globe. The game of cricket has given me a number of great experiences. I've been lucky enough and play with some fantastic players, travel to some brilliant places all over the world and make some life-long friendships.”

Waller was part of the Somerset campaign that made it into the T20 Blast finals on four occasions. He was also an instrumental figure in helping his side reach the title clash of 2021, where they lost to Kent Spitfires on the big day.

He claimed 139 wickets from 144 T20 games, all while maintaining an impressive average of 24.44. Playing at the high-scoring English venues, the spinner also maintained a strikingly low economy rate of 7.34.
