T20 World Cup: Danish Kaneria believes Babar's captaincy is in threat

Pakistan continues to be an unpredictable side in international cricket. They could one day be world-beaters, and the next day could be beaten by lesser-known sides.

Babar Azam will lead Pakistan in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2022, his second global event after the 2021 edition when they were knocked out in the semi-finals by eventual-winners Australia.

Babar, who is undergoing a lean patch with the bat will be under tremendous pressure to live up to the nation's expectations.

Former Pakistan player Danish Kaneria believes that Azam will lose his job as captain if the side underperforms in the marquee event in Australia next month.

The orthodox batter in 47 T20Is as Pakistan skipper, won 29 and lost 13, wherein five ended in no results.

What Kaneria had to say

"Babar Azam is out of form. Several questions have also been raised about his captaincy. I think this will be his last chance as captain. He will be under tremendous pressure because if this team doesn't do well, it will lead to his exit as captain,"

Pakistan are in Super 12 Group 2 with arch-rivals India, Bangladesh, South Africa, and two qualifying teams from round 1.  Pakistan's fourth highest-wicket-taker in Tests, Kaneria raised eyebrows over Azam's role as an opener in T20Is as well heading into the event, after a poor Asia Cup 2022 outing.

Azam's immediate assignment is against the visiting England, who play a seven-match T20I series starting September 20.
