Tennis great Roger Federer announced his retirement on social earlier this evening.

The 20 time Grand Slam champion confirmed the development on his social media accounts and the tributes have been pouring in from the sporting fraternity.

The 41-year-old is widely regarded as the greatest Tennis player of all time and he will be seen in action in the Laver Cup in London next week. It will be the final professional participation of his illustrious career.

Federer has had his fair share of injury problems over the years and he has been struggling with persistent knee issues over the last three years.

The Swiss international has now revealed that he is fully aware of his physical capabilities following the recurring injury problems and he has therefore decided that is best for him to walk away from the sport.

Federer has played over 1500 matches during the course of his 24 year career.

Federer confirms his decision on Social Media

“As many of you know, the past three years have presented me with challenges in the form of injuries and surgeries. I’ve worked hard to return to full competitive form. But I also know my body’s capacities and limits, and its message to me lately has been clear. I am 41 years old. I have played more than 1,500 matches over 24 years. Tennis has treated me more generously than I ever would have dreamt, and now I must recognise when it is time to end my competitive career.

“The Laver Cup next week in London will be my final ATP event. I will play more tennis in the future, of course, but just not in grand slams or on the tour.”

Indian Cricketers chip in with their tributes

Meanwhile, Indian cricketers Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Dinesh Karthik and Munaf Patel have taken to social media to pay their tributes to the Tennis legend.
