The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) unveiled the 15-member Indian squad on Monday for the upcoming T20I World Cup. The team has already come under the scanner, with the fans and the cricket analysts questioning the selection and non-selection of certain players.

One of the major exclusions from the T20I World Cup squad has been Ravi Bishnoi. The young spinner formed a part of the Asia Cup team, but he has been selected as a standby for the ICC event. Bishnoi rose to fame in the Indian Premier League for his spectacular performance for Punjab Kings.

A glance at Bishnoi’s numbers

This year, the 22-year-old continued his exploits for the debutants Lucknow Super Giants. In 37 IPL matches so far, Bishnoi has picked as many wickets at an economy rate of 7.53. As far as his performance for the Men in Blue is concerned, the leg spinner has 16 scalps from ten games.

Also, he featured in the playing XI in Asia Cup in just one game against Pakistan and ended up picking the wicket of Babar Azam while maintaining an economy rate of 6.5. Thus, the cricket fraternity seemed surprised by the young rookie’s snub from the side. India decided to go with four spinners in the main squad, including Yuzvendra Chahal, Ravi Ashwin, Deepak Hooda, and Axar Patel.

Gavaskar has some advice for the youngster

Elaborating his opinion on Bishnoi, former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar mentioned that the leg spinner has a long way to go. Gavaskar believes that the exclusion will help the 22-year-old improve his game for the better.

In a conversation with India Today, the former skipper said:

"Well, he has got age on his side. There is another T20 World Cup in a couple of years' time. There are so many T20 World Cups that he can play in the future. He should now perform in such a way that he becomes undroppable. So that's the only way to look at it. He is a young man. It's a good experience for him to know he can't get into every team."

Meanwhile, Gavaskar also praised the Indian squad for the T20I World Cup. The former skipper believes that the selectors have done a good job. With both Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel available, the veteran is hoping that India will solve their bowling woes. He also urged the fans to support the team rather than cribbing about the selection of the players.
