ENG vs SA: Dean Elgar cites lack of experience as the reason behind defeat

South Africa ended up on the wrong side of the result in the final Test of the three-match series against England. The team made a blistering start to the England tour by defeating the host by an innings and 12 runs. However, England bounced back in the second Test to score a win by an innings and 85 runs. They continued the momentum in the final game as well to score a victory by nine wickets.

Following a 1-2 loss against England in the three-match series, South Africa's skipper Dean Elgar has highlighted the lack of experience in the batting unit. Notably, the batters were responsible for the sinking of the Proteas ship in the final Test. The visitors scored only 118 runs in the first innings while their second batting innings saw them registering a total of 169.

Elgar backs inexperienced batting line-up

Reflecting on the defeat, the skipper reckoned that experience is extremely vital in Test cricket but this is something that the current Proteas side is deprived of. Elgar believes that they need to look at the experienced players in the First-Class setup and include them on the National side.

Elgar was quoted as saying by Times Live:

“It is a tough thing now because the guys have to learn [about] the toughest format without many experienced heads around them, which is always something we were aware of because of the number of guys who retired back-to-back. However, that is the cards we were dealt and we have to find ways to ease the blow.”

Further, the skipper also reflected on how they struggled with the batting conditions in the England pitches. England is known to aid the fast bowlers as the ball is constantly nipping and swinging.

The skipper reflects on the Australia tour

The majority of South African batters don’t have any experience in playing the longest format in the United Kingdom. Thus, the captain backed his players saying that it is overwhelming to play on England pitches and they will get better with time.

South Africa don't have much time to introspect their loss against England. The team will be traveling to Australia for the T20I World Cup next month while their next assignment in the longest format starts on December 17 with a three-match Test series against the Kangaroos.

Speaking about the same, Elgar mentioned:

“I think that was always going to be a big series, another tough series away from home. The series will be one big World Cup final, but every Test match is something you have to live and die for. In a three-match series against Australia, every match will be huge.”
