England cricketer Joe Root left his Test captaincy role earlier this year. His resignation made way for Ben Stokes to take over the mantle, one which he first helmed with a home series against New Zealand in June.

Having played the entirety of England’s home season this year, Root recently heaped praise on his new skipper. The Yorkshire-based cricketer said that it has been real joy for him to see Stokes approach his new leadership role for the England team.

Under Stokes, England defeated the visiting South Africans by nine wickets in the third Test to take home the series 2-1, despite losing the first Test by an innings.

Overall, the all-rounder has led his national side to six wins in seven Tests in his first summer as full-time captain.

Prior to his appointment as skipper, the Three Lions had won just a solitary Test out of their previous 17 attempts, all during Joe Root’s tenure.

While speaking with Sky Sports after win over the Proteas, Root said:

“It's been incredible, great fun to be a part of, great fun to play the style of cricket we have, and to get back to winning ways as well. I am absolutely thrilled for him [Stokes]. He has been awesome. He’s galvanised the team really well, been really clear with his messaging. He leads by example on the field.”

“He’s led in every way possible this summer. It’s been a real joy to watch him take to that position like a duck to water.”
