Australia's former ODI captain Aaron Finch has put weight behind David Warner to lead the side as his successor. The statement comes after Finch announced his retirement from one-day cricket, playing the third match against New Zealand as his final game in the format.

Warner, who was handed a life ban from leadership following his involvement in the sandpaper-gate scandal, was always a point of discussion for the selectors. He recently claimed that not overturning the ban could severely affect his future.

Other than Warner, Pat Cummins and Steve Smith are also in contention for the prized leadership role, which could come up for grabs after the T20 World Cup 2022.

Finch believes in Warner's abilities

Finch, who led Australia for a considerable time, mentioned he truly admires Warner as the captain and under his tactical leadership, the players enjoyed their time. He said,

"I think CA (Cricket Australia) I think are revisiting what that looks like. He's someone I've played under a few times for Australia when he's had the opportunity to captain, and he's been fantastic. He's an unbelievable tactical captain and someone who at the time the guys loved playing under,"

He also quipped that Warner's ban should be overturned, although he's unsure of the board's position on it.

"I'm not 100 per cent sure of what CA's position is on it. But would I like to see it overturned? (Yes) … he's someone who, you do your time and he's well and truly done that I think."

With the 2023 World Cup in mind, they might want someone who could play the perfect role of a leader and captain, along with some experience.
