Myth Busters: India lost most matches when Sachin Tendulkar scored a century

‘People throw stones at you and you convert them into milestones’ - Sachin Tendulkar.

Well who better to talk about milestones other than Sachin Tendulkar. Pick up the cricketing record books and there will be only a few batting records which the man does not have to himself.

In a career spanning 24 years, Sachin achieved nearly all the milestones a batter could ever dream of.

Well for today let us talk about his perfect 100. Yes, his hundred centuries in international cricket. In 663 international matches, Sachin has scored 100 centuries.

To be more precise, Sachin has 49 centuries in 463 ODIs and 51 in 200 Tests.

But there has been a general belief that while Sachin scored hundreds India failed to win the matches. How true is this belief? Let us take a close look at the numbers and verify the truth behind the statement.

ODI Career

Out of the 49 centuries Sachin has scored in ODIs, India has won 33 matches. The win percentage resulting in 67.34%. Out of these 49 centuries Sachin scored 17 of them while the team was chasing. Well for the believers that Sachin failed to win matches for India, the number might surprise them.

In the 17 matches that Sachin scored a century in the second innings of the match India managed to win 14 matches. The win percentage here is 82.35%.

Test Career

Now, let us look at his numbers in the longest format of the game. Sachin has scored 51 centuries in 200 matches. Out of these 51 centuries 20 came in winning cause, the percentage being 39.21%. While 20 other centuries came in matches that were drawn, the percentage being the same.

So India lost only 11 Tests in which Sachin scored a century, which is only 21.56% of the matches.

Now, the win percentage in Tests seems a bit less. But one has to be reminded that when Sachin began his career the demographics of the game were not the same as we see now.

First of all India was not at all dominating cricket at the time. And for some part of his career it was a one man show for India. The India batting was all about Sachin Tendulkar.

Also, the pace of cricket as a game was not as fast as now. The batters were more patient and 40 wickets being lost over the course of five days of a Test match was not common, so draws were more of a frequent occurrence than it is now.

So, considering the era in which Sachin played his cricket , 73 of his 100 centuries were in causes in which India did not lose the match. The numbers are more than decent. A 73% success rate was rare especially for an Indian batter in those days, hence we might as well put this myth to rest once and for all.
