On this day, four years ago, Alastair Cook finished his Test career with a fitting hundred against India at the Oval.

Buttler, Cook's knock keeps England ahead in first innings

Opting to bat first, England were off to a strong start. Cook (71) stitched a 60-run partnership with Keaton Jennings (23) and followed it up with a 73-run stand with Moeen Ali (50).

However, the failure of Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes put them under the pump. However, the belligerent knock of Jos Buttler (89) and the support from Stuart Broad (38) paved the Three Lions to a total of 332.

In response, KL Rahul and Cheteshwar Pujara provided a stable start for India. Afterwards, Virat Kohli (49) and Hanuma Vihari (56) were proficient to steer the team on the right path. In the end, Jadeja remained unbeaten on 86, as India bundled out for 296

In the second innings, Jennings and Ali could not be a good support at the top. However, Cook unleashed his best with his sparkling shots, especially towards the covers, and resurrected the team's innings with Root.

In the 70th over of the innings, Cook on 96 nudged the ball towards the point off Jadeja and took a single. To everyone's surprise, the throw by Bumrah towards the bowling end could not find any takers, and went for a four. In this pursuit, the southpaw completed his 33rd century in his last innings.

The knocks of Cook (147) and Root (125) assisted England to declare on 423/8, and set a target of 464.

In response, India produced a fightback with Rahul (149) and Rishabh Pant (114), but India were all-out for 345, and England won the series 4-1.
