In what comes as a major update, the final of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2022-23 is likely to move from Lord's to The Oval next summer.

Earlier in July 2022, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced that the World Test Championship finals in 2023 and 2025 will be played at the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground in London.

However, the already signed commercial agreements at Lord’s hasn't gone well with the ICC as the events associated with International Cricket Council require a “no-advertisement stadium” or safe to say they need a clean venue for its own sponsors and partners.

While the ICC is yet to make any announcement regarding the venue, Surrey is expected to weigh in for the WTC final. The CEO of the club, Steve Elworthy, has a good record of organizing several ICC events in the past, including the 2019 World Cup.

Notably, Lord’s was informally designated as the venue for the final of the inaugural edition of the World Test Championship but the game had to be shifted to Southampton at the Ageas Bowl due to Covid-19.

The Kane Williamson-led New Zealand beat Virat Kohli’s India in the final of the first edition of the World Test Championship to lift the WTC title.

As for the ongoing cycle, England has wiped out their hopes of making it to the final of the Championship following their dismal start to the WTC 2022-23 cycle. Mighty Australia, South Africa, and India are the frontrunners in this regard.
