County Championship 2022: Durham could be penalised for Maddinson's bat size

Australia batter Nic Maddinson has been involved in a controversy due to the size of his bat in a County Championship Division Two 2022 match.

Maddinson, while playing for Durham against Derbyshire caught the attention of the umpire, Hassan Adnan,  who halted the game to have a check on the southpaw's willow.

In his multiple attempts, Adnan could not pass the bat through the measurement gauge. The move resulted in the match referee Mike Smith not allowing Maddinson to carry on his innings with the same bat.

Furthermore, the concerned willow failed another re-evaluation test after the Day's play, and will now be sent to England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) for the final decision.

According to the playing conditions of the International Cricket Council (ICC), bats which are wider than 11 cm and deeper than 6.8 cm are not allowed to be used by the batters.

Due to this development, Durham may lose up to 16 Championship points, with the final judgement in hands of the ECB.

Last month, Durham's opponent Derbyshire faced two-point deduction following the Mattie McKiernan's bat failing to sneak through the measurement gauge in a Royal London Cup match.

Derbyshire vs Durham: Exciting Day 4 awaits

At the end of Day 3's play, Derbyshire are at 185/7, and are leading the by 268 runs. It will be interesting to see if Durham's pace attack secures early wickets in the morning session of Day 4.

If the tail gets dismissed early, Durham will stand a chance to chase down the target and win their only second game of the season.
