Mark Waugh questions Aaron Finch's place in the ODI team

Riding on a game-changing partnership between Alex Carey and Cameron Green, Australia registered a thrilling two-wicket victory over Trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand in the first ODI in Cairns yesterday.

However, the second consecutive failure of their top five has become a major concern for the Australian think tank. Notably, skipper Aaron Finch has had a horrible time in the middle for quite a while now, managing just 169 runs at a mediocre average of 14.08 in his last twelve ODI innings.

Former legendary Australian opener Mark Waugh has criticised Finch for his poor run of form. Talking about Finch's technique on Fox Cricket, Waugh said that as a right-handed batter, he needs to be proactive against the incoming deliveries.

Waugh, who represented Australia in 372 international matches, further opined that the veteran opener should be shown the exit door if he doesn't get his mojo back in time.

"He just can't access the ball. When you lock yourself in like that, it's a good bit of bowling, no doubt about it, but you have to be expecting that if you're a right-hand batsman,"

"The selectors have shown a lot of faith in him, they have given him a lot of lee-way as well. At some stage, if he keeps failing in this series, I think the call has got to be made sooner rather than later."

Yesterday was the fourth consecutive time a left-arm seamer dismissed Finch in an ODI. His issue with the incoming deliveries seems pretty evident and has resulted in his slump in form. Nevertheless, the Australian captain needs to resolve the technical problem quickly in order to prolong his international career.
