Recent developments in New Zealand Cricket (NZC) have opened room for debate regarding players' responsibility towards the nation and franchise cricket. The Kiwis skipper Kane Williamson, who is gearing up for a clash against Australia in the three-match One-Day International (ODI) series, revealed that it is critical to find a balance between the ever-evolving cricket landscape in his home country.

All-rounder Colin de Grandhomme announced his international retirement last week, while premier fast-bowler Trent Boult opted out of NZC central contract the previous month. De Grandhomme will now be playing Big Bash League (BBL), and Boult will feature in International League T20 (ILT20), while New Zealand will be engaged in international commitments.

Williamson said that he understood players leaving to play cash-rich cricket, but was taken aback by the speed at which things are progressing.

"It's a tricky one because it is changing. So much seems to have happened so quickly. It does seem to be a movement in the landscape of the game. Every case is unique and every case has got their individual needs at different stages of their lives.

There are a lot of different franchise events happening and seeing players make decisions on their playing careers...suggests that there is a balance to strike and some things to work through."

"At the moment I'm very much here and looking to do my very best for the team. I love being involved in this environment."

New Zealand and Australia begin their 3-ODI series tomorrow (Sept 6) in Cairns. Cazaly's Stadium will host all the matches.

Aaron Finch and Co. will look to keep their winning ways afloat having beaten Zimbabwe 2-1 last week.

This is a crucial series for both sides, keeping in mind the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Super League, where New Zealand is fourth while Australia is languishing at seventh.
