The Zimbabwe cricket team are currently engaged in a three-match ODI series against hosts Australia, which they trail 0-2. The visitors' were handed an eight-wicket thumping defeat in the second match at Townsville today, after being bundled out for merely 96.

Sean Williams top-scored for the side, scoring 29 off 45, while the others fell like a deck of cards. The second ODI, which lasted just 41.3 overs, showcased the gap between both teams, something that Williams pointed out in his post-match conference.

Making a return from injury, the all-rounder said that Zimbabwean batters faced an uphill task against Australia's pace battery and that playing such strong sides will only improve them moving forward.

Williams on the loss

"You can call it a bad day, it's also a good sign of the difference between the two sides. Without being too negative about the whole thing there's definitely a skill gap between the teams, quite a big one as well, but it's a good opportunity… playing against teams like this is a good thing to bring a little bit more match awareness in the future for the [T20] World Cup, and when we get back down to our kind of level, we'll be that much better."

What's next for Zimbabwe?

The South African nation play the third and final ODI on Saturday and will look to notch up a win on this tour, having lost both games so far.

Zimbabwe's next international assignment will be the ICC T20 World Cup in October, where they are placed in Group B alongside Ireland, West Indies, and Scotland.

Meanwhile, Australia will face New Zealand at home before making a short trip to India ahead of the marquee T20 event.
