Former Australian seamer James Pattinson has decided to leave Nottinghamshire to return home to Australia with immediate effect, citing the toll of the county campaign on his body and family.

Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club on Tuesday (August 30) confirmed that Pattinson will miss the remainder of the season due to personal reasons. The ex-international cricketer requested to be released from the club and the management accepted his request.

Pattinson, who has played 21 Tests and 19 white-ball internationals for Australia, retired from international cricket in October last year following a series of injury concerns.

After retiring from international cricket, Pattinson signed an all-format deal with Nottinghamshire covering the entirety of the 2022 season. Having played for the club in 2017 and 2019, the right arm quick decided to return for his third spell with Nottinghamshire.

In his third spell with the club, the Victorian scalped 33 County Championship wickets for Notts, but could only bowl four overs in the T20 Blast 2022 and has not featured in the ongoing Royal London Cup 2022.

Pattinson takes an early exit

On his early exit from the club, the 32-year-old explained that he came to the decision for a combination of fitness and family reasons.

"After having another child recently, I'm keen to be there and provide support and I think the best place to do that is back in Australia. Also, my body has really struggled with getting through the county season, so I just really need to give it a break. I wish Notts all the very best for the rest of the season and really hope we can take out the second division title," said James Pattinson.

Nottinghamshire supports Pattinson's decision

“We’re all really sorry that Jimmy won’t be involved in these last few games. But it’s a decision he’s made that’s right for him, and one we respect completely, so we wish him and his family well," said the Nottinghamshire Head Coach Peter Moores.
