Indian skipper Rohit Sharma on Sunday (28 August) once again surpassed the run-tally of New Zealand batter Martin Guptill to become the top-scorer in the T20I format.

Sharma contributed 12 off 18 balls in the first fixture of the Asia Cup 2022 against their arch-rivals Pakistan. The charismatic batter could not convert his knock into big innings, after failing to clear the long-off boundary in a mistimed shot against Mohammad Nawaz.

With this knock, the 35-year-old has 3499 runs to his name in the shortest format in 125 innings at an average of 32.10, with four centuries.

On the other hand, Guptill has garnered 3497 runs in 117 innings at 31.79, with two tons. In his last T20I series against West Indies, the Kiwi batter scored 83 runs in four outings.

Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja help India prevail over Pakistan

Batting first, Pakistan posted 147 on the board, with the top contribution of 43 from Mohammad Rizwan. The pick of the bowlers for India was Bhuvneshwar Kumar with four scalps, followed by Pandya with three wickets.

India openers Sharma and Rahul (0) could not get the team to a positive start. Although Virat Kohli contributed 35, he was dismissed at the wrong time, resulting in India getting under the pump.

In the end, the ice-cool knocks from Ravindra Jadeja (35) and Pandya (33*) saw Team India securing a nail-biting victory and setting the tone for the rest of the tournament.
