Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), on Monday (August 22) freed the head coach Russell Domingo from the T20I side ahead of the much-anticipated Asia Cup 2022 and  asked him to focus on the One-Day Internationals and the longest format of the game.

The BCB President Nazmul Hassan while announcing the development said that the former Indian cricketer Sridharan Sriram, who was named the technical consultant of the team last week, will look after the team in the upcoming tournament.

The former South African Domingo was initially roped in by Bangladesh as head coach back in August 2019 on a two-year deal. Later, the BCB extended it until November 2023.

However, owing to Bangladesh's recent T20 struggles, BCB decided to free him for the quickest setup and asked him to focus on the remaining two formats. Notably, Bangladesh has won just two of their last 15 T20s and suffered their maiden series loss to Zimbabwe earlier this month.

BCB President Nazmul Hassan had his say on the development

"Russell Domingo won't be part of the T20 set-up. He will be with ODIs and Tests," Nazmul was quoted as saying by the AFP news agency.

"There's no 'head coach for the T20 side."

"We have a batting coach, a spin coach, fast bowling coach, and a fielding coach. We also have the captain. We also have a technical consultant for T20s. He will give the game plan."

Domingo welcomes the move

Domingo also responded to the development and said that BCB's decision to separate the roles is a good move, given he will be able to shift his complete focus on Test matches and ODIs.

"It is a great idea as it gives me a nice focus on the Test match and 50-overs stuff."

"We have had some great results and bad results in T20s. I don't think it is a bad idea to make a fresh approach in the T20s. It is not about me, I am all for making the team better."

Bangladesh, placed in Group B will begin their tournament campaign on August 30 against Afghanistan before they take on Sri Lanka on September 1.
