On this day, thirteen years ago, Jonathan Trott hit a century on his Test debut against Australia and helped England to secure a dominating victory at The Oval.

England takes a significant lead in first innings

Opting to bat first, England lost Alastair Cook (10) early. Then, the valiant knocks from Andrew Strauss (55) and Ian Bell (72) helped the hosts to stabilize their innings.

Afterwards, Trott (41) and Stuart Broad (37) were the key contributors to guiding England to a score of 332.  For Australia, Peter Siddle was the most successful bowler with four wickets.

In response, Australia had a sumptuous start with a 73-run stand between Shane Watson (34) and Simon Katich (50). However, the middle order fell like a pack of cards and completely surrendered to Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann's brilliance.

Only Siddle could provide notable contribution of 26 to help Australia finish on 160, and give away a lead of 172 runs to England.

Trott powers England to a decisive victory

It was a bad start to England's second innings as they lost three wickets in the first hour or two, on a score of 39. However, Strauss added 118 runs for the fourth wicket with the debutant Trott, which certainly turned the tide in England's favour.

Trott mustered 119 off 193 balls, and Swann delivered a crunch knock of 63 to pave way for England to declare on 373/9, and set up a target of 546 for Australia.

In response, Aussies once again got a positive start with Watson and Katich. Infact, Ricky Ponting (66) and Michael Hussey (121) exuded confidence to the team with their powerful knocks.

However, Australia were dismissed for a score of 348, resulting in England winning by 197 runs. Swann played a key role with the ball as well to take four wickets.
