Punjab Kings not to renew Anil Kumble's contract, looking for new coach

Indian Premier League franchise Punjab Kings have decided not to re-sign their current head coach Anil Kumble for a second term. Anil Kumble, who has been coaching the franchise since the last three years, might not be trusted again with the responsibility as his side failed to qualify in all the seasons under him.

Punjab has finished on sixth position every year since Kumble's arrival, and what might be the case, the franchise is on the lookout for a new coach. However, Kumble's ongoing contract runs until September, which the reports in Cricbuzz suggest is unlikely to be looked upon.

The Mohali-based franchise is currently led by Mayank Agarwal, who was appointed skipper for the 2022 season before KL Rahul left the team to join the newly formed franchise Lucknow Supergiants. Kumble, meanwhile, in the past, has coached Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians along with being the head coach for the Indian side in 2016-17 before having a fallout with former skipper Virat Kohli.

Punjab Kings exploring different options

What some reports might suggest, the Punjab side has sent offers to former English World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan and former World Cup-winning coach Trevor Bayliss to be their head coach for the upcoming season. One unnamed former Indian coach is also under contention.

Morgan, who was formerly associated with the franchise as a recently retired player, is currently captaining London Spirit in the Hundred.

On the other hand, Bayliss has coached Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders in the past, successfully lifting the trophy with the latter in 2012 and 2014 with Gautam Gambhir.
