Where the fire ignited

Anil Kumble, India's leading wicket-taker in Tests, was inarguably a master at his work. The leg-spinner made his Test debut against England in 1990 but immediately started to face the heat.

Kapil Dev with a bouncer foxed England's lamb. However, Kumble, who was stationed at the deep fine leg, spilled out a sitter. As the all-rounder then eyed a world record for most wickets in Test matches, his frustration grew after the debutant dropped the catch.

Kumble was given a mouthful by his senior as his Test career was off to a terrible start in Manchester.

Bedi talks about the incident

India's legendary spinner Bishan Singh Bedi, who was the then cricket manager at Old Trafford, shed light on the incident. Bedi gave a whole account of the events that followed.

The tweaker even revealed that he saw Kumble crying in the dressing room and how those tears helped in shaping up a player that went on to become one of the most successful spinners.

"It was his first Test match. I was the cricket manager at Old Trafford. Anil dropped the match and Kapil scolded him on the ground. It was his debut and Kapil I guess had played 100 Tests by then. When I went to the dressing room, I found him crying. That might have strengthened him. Shedding tears at that moment was important. It was crucial that he felt bad at that moment for what emerged later,"

A glimpse of Kumble's heroic career

The 51-year-old enjoyed a fairy-tale run at the international arena, emerging as India's most successful spinner, claiming 619 wickets in 132 Tests. He added up 337 more wickets to his overall tally that came in 271 ODIs.
