India’s Test batting whiz Cheteshwar Pujara captained Sussex in their Royal London Cup match against Warwickshire earlier this week. While Chasing 311, the experienced batter smeared a 79-ball 107 in a high-scoring thriller at Edgbaston.

Known for occupying long hours at the crease in Tests, the Indian veteran put up an entertaining exhibition through his innings, one which saw seven hits to the fence and two over it. Pujara also took a special liking to Liam Norwell at one stage, accumulating 22 runs of the pacer’s final over to keep his side in the run chase.

Pujara describes knock one of his best, regrets defeat

While speaking on Sussex's official YouTube channel, the senior Indian batsman expressed his regret for not guiding his side over the line against Warwickshire. It is to be noted that the cricketer’s dismissal at 107 in the penultimate over stemmed the run-flow thereafter, with Sussex falling just four runs short of their target.

Pujara also described the innings as one of his better knocks in limited-overs formats. The 34-year-old said:

“Well, it was one of the best innings in the ODI format. If it was on the winning note, it would have been better. We were not too far. I wanted to be there till the last. If I didn't get out, we had a little more chance of winning the game”.

The Indian batsman is enjoying a prolific run for Sussex this season. In the eight County Championship matches he has played so far this year, the right-hander has plundered 1,094 runs at a Bradmanesque average of 109.40.

The cricketer seems to have carried his sublime first-class touch to the limited-overs roots of the Royal London Cup, as he has already piled up 193 runs at 64.33 across four innings.

His next assignment includes a match against Surrey at the County Cricket Ground in Hove on August 14.
