Ricky Ponting doubts Mohammed Shami’s place in India’s T20I setup

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting recently weighed in on Mohammed Shami’s absence from India’s Asia Cup 2022 squad.

The tearaway speedster played the last of his 18 T20Is during the 2021 T20 World Cup in UAE. Being repeatedly snubbed from India’s 20-overs setups, the cricketer still remains a cogent part of his country’s best XI across Tests and ODIs.

Ricky Ponting believes Mohammed Shami’s strength lies in Tests

“He’s (Shami) been a very, very good bowler for India for a long time now. If you look at his strengths, his Test cricket is probably where he thrives the most. I think there are better fast bowlers in Indian T20 cricket than Shami and they’ve only named three (for the Asia Cup). So, if there’s potentially four named in the squad, he might be the fourth man in.”

Earlier this month, the BCCI announced a 15-player Indian squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2022. Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel were excluded from the line-up as the duo are currently nursing their injuries.
