In a damning development for the Indian men's cricket team, superstar pacer Jasprit Bumrah is set to be ruled out of the Asia Cup due to back injury.

According to a report published in news agency PTI, a BCCI official confirmed that Bumrah will sit out of the Asia Cup in order to regain full fitness ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia.

"Jasprit Bumrah has a back injury and will not play in the Asia Cup. He is our main bowler and we would like him to be back in action before the T20 World Cup. We can't risk him in Asia Cup and the injury could aggravate," said a BCCI official.

Bumrah has been suffering from back spasms for quite some time now. The 28-year-old also sat out of the final ODI against England last month due to the same issue.

Bumrah will undergo intense rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in order to regain full fitness ahead of the home series against Australia and South Africa prior to the marquee event in Australia.

India will be without the services of Harshal Patel and Jasprit Bumrah in the Asia Cup

The injury to Jasprit comes as a huge body blow for the Men in Blue, who are already grappling with a rib injury to seamer Harshal Patel.

With both Bumrah and Harshal set to miss out of the Asia Cup, it will be interesting to see which seamer gets a call-up to the squad.

Deepak Chahar is likely to slot right back in the squad following a long lay-off due to injury.

He will have to take up the powerplay responsibilities while the duo of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Arshdeep Singh could be off-loaded to perform the death overs role in the absence of Jasprit.

The national selection committee is likely to pick the squad for the Asia Cup on Monday (August 08). However, it is still not clear when the squad will be made public.

The Asia Cup will take place in the United Arab Emirates between August 27-September 11. Defending champions India will open their campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan on August 28.
