With the battle for the final berth currently underway at Edgbaston, it was the Smriti Mandhana show in the first half hour of the semi-final bout between India and England.

Drives, sweeps, pulls - Mandhana with her nonchalant strokeplay batted like a dream in the knockout affair. Besides giving India a mighty edge with her blistering start, the southpaw's fearless attitude has reaped rewards for her as well.

Smashing her way to a 23-ball fifty, Mandhana registered the quickest half-century for India in women's T20Is. The 26-year-old shattered her own record as she had scored a fifty off 24 deliveries versus New Zealand in 2019.

Mandhana has now broken into the elite list of the fastest fifty-scorers among the women in the international T20s. She, currently, stands joint-fifth in the record books.

Here are the top 5 batters on the list:

  • Sophie Devine - 18 balls, versus India
  • Nida Dar - 20 balls, versus South Africa
  • Alyssa Healy - 21 balls, versus Ireland
  • Sophie Devine - 21 balls, versus Ireland
  • Deandra Dottin - 22 balls, versus Australia
  • Rachel Priest - 22 balls, versus India
  • Nayan Anil - 22 balls, versus Saudi Arabia
  • Amantle Mokgotlhe - 23 balls, versus Mozambique
  • Smriti Mandhana - 23 balls, versus England

England recover after Mandhana's onslaught

As Mandhana was dismissed for a 32-ball 61, England made amends. Natalie Sciver and Freya Kemp combined to strike thrice, before they summed Indian innings on 164/5. At the moment of writing, the Women in Blue have struck the first blow in the form of Sophia Dunkley.
