CWG 2022: Merciless England Women blows away New Zealand in a one-sided affair

In a rather one-sided affair, England Women swatted aside the White Ferns to register a thumping seven-wicket victory in the final league stage fixture of the ongoing Commonwealth Games (CWG) Women's T20 Competition.

The shambolic batting show of White Ferns

New Zealand Women could never really find any rhythm in the match as they were constrained to a below-par total of 71/9 in the first inning. The Three Lionesses, in reply, overwhelmed the target in just 11.4 overs and with seven wickets in hand.

England Women's pursuit of a below-par target was dealt an early blow as they lost their opener Danni Wyatt (1) cheaply. Sophia Dunkley (19) and Alice Capsey (23) then shared a 41-run stand for the second wicket to kill the chase in the power play itself.

Amelia Kerr dismissed the duo in her successive overs to give the Ferns a ray of hope but it was for nothing as Natalie Sciver (7*) and wicket-keeper batter Amy Jones (18*) scored runs at a brisk rate to hunt down the target with consummate ease.

England bowlers ran riot over the opposition

For New Zealand, apart from Kerr, who got two wickets at the backend, Fran Jonas also scalped one. Earlier, White Ferns' decision of batting first backfired them big time.

Maddy Green top scored for them with 19 runs while Hannah Rowe remained unbeaten for 18-ball 10. The Rest of the New Zealand batters couldn't even cross the double-digit mark.

The experienced English pacer Katherine Brunt was the star performer with the ball as she gave away only four runs in her spell of three overs and picked two wickets. Isabelle Wong and Sarah Glenn also got a couple of wickets each.

The left-arm orthodox spinner Sophie Ecclestone was the second most economical bowler for England as she conceded only 11 runs in her quota of four overs and claimed one wicket as well.

What’s to Come

New Zealand will now face mighty Australia in the first Semi-Final of the tournament while England will challenge the Women in Blue in the second Semi-Final. Both the games will be played on Saturday, August 6 in Birmingham.
