All-round Warwickshire trounce Somerset to win County Championship 2021-22

A collective effort from the bowlers led by Chris Woakes and Craig Miles has made Warwickshire the new champions of County Championship 2021-22. They topped Division one and thereby booked the bragging rights.

Somerset required 273 runs on the final day of their last league game in Division 1, while Warwickshire needed all the 10 wickets to lift the championship title. In the end, it was the team from Birmingham who got the better of their opponent and won the game by 118 runs to lift the trophy for the first time since 2012.

Woakes was the pick of the bowlers with six wickets across two innings of the game while it was Danny Briggs’ all-around performances in both innings that kept the Warcs in the game. To put them further in control, Tom Yate’s century in the second innings set the game up beautifully on the final day.

Winning the toss and eclectic to bowl first, Somerset were thwarted by an impressive Warcs batting line-up with the likes of Dom Sibley, Will Rhodes and Saim scoring half-centuries.

Warwickshire posted a decent first innings total of 367 runs but Somerset were not out of woods in the first innings itself as their batsmen led an impressive riposte and posted 389 runs on the board.

Having conceded a lead of 22 runs, Warwickshire needed batsmen to put their hands up one more time and aggressive innings from Yates along with another set of fifties from Sibley and Rhodes provided Warcs with a perfect platform to press on for a win on the final day.

On the final day, Somerset openers Ben Green and Tom Lammonboy tried their best to provide solidity to their batting effort but once Lammonboy was snaffled up by Briggs, the floodgates opened for Warcs and the men in marron slipped to 35/3 in no time from 31/0 with the loss of both the openers and Azhar Ali.

The championship triumph marks a remarkable turnaround for Warwickshire who failed to win even a single game in the last season. They had finished seventh in the championship in the 2019 edition and their last triumph had come way back in 2012.

Sri Lanka Cricket announced that iconic Sri Lankan batter Mahela Jayawardene has accepted their offer to work with the national team for the first round of their T20 World Cup 2021 campaign. Apart from this role, the former skipper has also been roped in as a consultant for the Under-19 team of Sri Lanka for their World Cup campaign starting next year in West Indies. “He will share his vast experience and provide invaluable strategic support for the players and management team during a 7-day period from 16-23 October when the team will play Namibia, Ireland, and the Netherlands as they seek to qualify for the Group Stages,” the SLC press release said about the current Mumbai Indians coach joining their national team. “Jayawardena has also accepted an invitation to be a Consultant and Mentor for Sri Lanka Under 19 as it prepares for next year’s ICC Under 19 World Cup in the West Indies,” it added. Jayawardena was appointed to the dual roles by Sri Lanka Cricket’s Executive Committee following recommendations made by the Technical Advisory Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket. Jayawardene, who played 149 Tests, 448 ODIs and 55 T20Is for the Sri Lankan side was approached by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for its head coach position post the T20 World Cup, but he reportedly refused the offer. Indian current head coach Ravi Shastri would be leaving the team after the World Cup.

IPL 2021 | Tim David makes IPL debut against Chennai Super Kings

The Royal Challengers Bangalore has handed IPL debut to their new recruit, Tim David, in the game against the Chennai Super Kings at Sharjah on September 24. David was roped in as a replacement for New Zealand’s Finn Allen for the second phase of the 14th edition of the IPL. David was in red-hot form in the English domestic 50-over competition and scored two tons that earned him an IPL contract. David, a Singapore national will be the first from his country to play in the Indian Premier League. He also plays for Western Australia in the Australian domestic circuit and Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League. He has played 23 innings in the Big Bash League and has scored runs at a staggering strike rate of 148 runs per 100 balls. RCB’s head coach and director Mike Hesson had suggested that they would be looking to attack the Super Kings in “specific areas” and it looks David has been picked to smash the men in yellow lower down the order.

The toss at the Sharjah Cricket Ground has been delayed in the match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Chennai Super Kings. The dust storm at the venue has made it impossible for the toss to take place and the umpires have announced that the next inspection will take place at 07:25 pm IST. This is the 35th match of the IPL and the second league game for both the RCB and CSK.
