Brief Scores: England: 364-9 (50 overs) [Dawid Malan: 140 (107), Joe Root: 82 (68); Mahedi Hasan 4/71 (8), Shoriful Islam 3/75 (10)] defeated Bangladesh: 227 all out (48.2 overs) [Litton Das: 76 (66), Mushfiqur Rahim: 51 (64); Reece Topley 4/43 (10), Chris Woakes 2/49 (8)] by 137 runs.

Dawid Malan lights up Dharamshala’s HPCA Stadium with a marvellous century as England reboot their 2023 World Cup run with a big win over Bangladesh. Apart from Malan, senior batters Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow also stood up to the occasion as the trio collectively shrugged off England’s opening defeat to New Zealand.

Reece Topley, with his sublime new-ball gambit in the run-chase, further joined in the party to restrict Bangladesh within 137 runs from their monumental target.

Dawid Malan produces career-best 140 as ENG mounts 364

With memories of their nine-wicket larruping at the hands of New Zealand still lingering on their minds, defending champions England took the field against Bangladesh at the scenic HPCA Stadium with a bat in hand and a steady resolve in mind upfront.

Openers Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow, seemingly unfazed by recent trouncing, unleashed a barrage of boundaries on the Bangladeshi bowling attack and shared a 115-run stand for the opening wicket. While Bairstow was cleaned up for 52 by Shakib Al Hasan, his partner motored through the innings alongside Joe Root with another 151-run partnership to take England to 266-1 in 37 overs at one stage.

Malan produced his sixth ODI century and went on to slap his career-best score with a boundary-laden 140 from 107 deliveries. However, his dismissal triggered a colossal collapse as England barely managed to score at run-a-ball in their final 10 overs to finish at 364-9.

Among Bangladesh bowlers, Mahedi Hasan’s four-fer and Shoriful Islam’s death-overs dexterity inflicted the most damage to the Englishmen in their pursuit of a potential 450-plus score.

Reece Topley extinguishes Bangladesh fire within opening spell

Reece Topley packed Najmul Hossain Shanto for a duck, and Tanzid Hasan, and Shakib Al Hasan for one each, all within the space of 13 deliveries inside his opening spell of the innings. Battered and bruised at 49-4, opener Litton Das roared back into form and launched Bangladesh’s run-chase recovery with a rebellious half-century with senior man Mushfiqur Rahim.

However, Das’ 66-ball 76 proved too little and too late as Bangladesh eventually folded up for 227 inside their 50 overs. Topley, by the end of his 10-over quota, had four victims to his name, and he received much assistance from fellow new-ball paceman Chris Woakes.

Sam Curran, Mark Wood, Adil Rashid and Liam Livingstone also chipped in with wickets as England took home the game by 137 runs to pocket their opening points of the 2023 World Cup.
