Brief Scores: Australia: 367-9 (50 overs) [David Warner: 163 (124), Mitchell Marsh: 121 (108); Shaheen Shah Afridi 5/54 (10), Haris Rauf 3/83 (8)] defeated Pakistan: 305 all out (45.3 overs) [Imam-ul-Haq: 70 (71), Abdullah Shafique: 64 (61); Adam Zampa 4/53 (10), Marcus Stoinis 2/40 (5)] by 62 runs.

Australia tore through Pakistan to sustain their newfound winning momentum in the ongoing 2023 World Cup at Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Warner, Marsh rule Pakistan with twin tons

Australian openers David Warner and Mitchell Marsh piled on their early reprieves to score big against Pakistan’s bowling attack. The duo registered dazzling hundreds and they ended up sharing a colossal 259-run stand for the opening wicket.

It took Pakistan 34 overs to get their first breakthrough, and one ball to get their next as Shaheen Afridi dismissed Marsh and Glenn Maxwell in succession. Warner, on the other hand, launched nine sixes and 14 boundaries in his thunderous 124-ball 163 to top-score for his side.

Poised to get 420 at one stage, regular wickets dried up runs in the final 10 overs as Australia had to drag themselves to 367-9. Shaheen Afridi inflicted the most damage in the backend of the innings as the speedster claimed five wickets at an expense of just 54 in the high-scoring innings.

Pakistan fell short in spirited chase

Much like Australia, Pakistan openers Abdullah Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq also provided their side a rollicking start at the top with their 134-run partnership. The two cricketers cracked sparkling half-centuries, and their eventual dismissals at the hands of Marcus Stoinis in quick succession brought Australia back into the game.

Captain Babar Azam sustained his poor form with the bat as he was done-in by Adam Zampa for just 18. The ace Australian spinner collected three more wickets in the evening, including that of well-set batters Mohammad Rizwan and Iftikhar Ahmed.

Pakistan’s response eventually perished at 305 to grant Australia an emphatic 62-run win.
