South Africa is on the cusp of history at Lord’s after a resolute batting display on Day 3 of the ICC World Test Championship Final 2025 against Australia. Ending the day on 213/2, the Proteas require just 69 more runs to clinch their first-ever WTC title and their first ICC trophy in 26 years. However, the looming threat of rain on Day 4 could complicate their path.

Aiden Markram was the star of the day alongside skipper Temba Bavuma The duo made an unbroken 143-run stand, the highest of the match. Their partnership steered South Africa from early trouble at 70/2 to a commanding position by stumps.

Markram, Bavuma Stand Tall After Early Trouble

Australia, defending a second-innings total of 207, struck early to remove Ryan Rickelton and Wiaan Mulder. But Markram’s composure and Bavuma’s grit turned the tide. The match-defining moment came when Steve Smith dropped Bavuma on 28, injuring his finger in the process.

Earlier, Mitchell Starc’s unbeaten 58 had helped Australia stretch their lead, but the bowlers looked spent and ineffective by the final session, with South Africa dominating proceedings and finishing the day without further loss.

While South Africa may be favourites on paper heading into Day 4, the weather may have a say in the final outcome.
