In a remarkable achievement, Indian captain Rohit Sharma surpassed former skipper MS Dhoni and in most international runs across formats. The stylish batter attained the feat on day 1 of the ongoing second Test against West Indies at Port Of Spain, Trinidad.

Notably, Dhoni, who retired after the 2019 ODI World Cup, finished his international career with 17266 runs in 538 appearances. Sharma struck a glorious fifty in the first session of the Trinidad Test to surpass his tally and etch his name in history. Thus, he became the fifth-highest run-getter in international cricket among Indians.

Most international runs (Indians)

  • Sachin Tendulkar: 34357 runs in 664 matches
  • Virat Kohli: 25461 runs in 500* matches
  • Rahul Dravid: 24208 runs in 509 matches
  • Sourav Ganguly: 18575 runs in 424 matches
  • Rohit Sharma: 17291* runs in 443 matches
  • MS Dhoni: 17266 runs in 538 matches

Sharma had an outstanding start to the third WTC cycle, slamming a match-winning hundred in the first Test of the series, which India won comprehensively by an innings and 141 runs. Continuing his stellar run in the Caribbean, the Mumbai batter hammered a breathtaking fifty, providing India with a solid start in the decider at Port of Spain, Trinidad.

Riding on sensational knocks from Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal, India are marching towards a mammoth first-innings score, placed at 139 for no loss in just 31.1 overs as of writing.
