There has been an interesting debate going around regarding the 1,000 match of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Earlier, the official broadcaster were running that the Chennai Super Kings vs Mumbai Indians IPL match on May 6 was the 1,000th and the marquee match of the IPL. But if we do the permutation and combination, it can be noted that the game between Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals tonight will be the 1,000 game of the coveted tournament.
Why MI vs RR is the 1,000th game ?
Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, two superpowers and two of the most successful teams in the IPL history. So it would have been fitting to have two champion teams collide in the 1,000th game of the historic tournament.
But that's not the case. At the start of the IPL 2023, 951 games were played in the tournament's history. That means the 49th game of IPL 2023, which is the CSK vs MI battle should have been the historic game. However, it has to be noted that there have been 7 matches which have ended in no result.
Even though not a single delivery was bowled in these seven games, they still count as an official game. Hence, in the history books, 958 IPL matches have taken place. That means that the 42nd game of IPL 2023 - MI vs RR is the 1,000th match of the tournament.
