Australia took firm control of the second Test against Sri Lanka, reducing the hosts to 229/9 by stumps on Day 1 at the Galle International Stadium on Thursday. Despite half-centuries from Dinesh Chandimal and Kusal Mendis, Sri Lanka failed to capitalise on their decision to bat first after winning the toss.

Nathan Lyon and Mitchell Starc led the charge, picking up three wickets each, while Matthew Kuhnemann and Travis Head also made significant contribution.
