Delhi Capitals (DC) skipper David Warner admitted that the horrendous start with the bat contributed to a 27-run defeat to the Chennai Super Kings at the Chepauk on Wednesday night.
Chasing what Warner termed as a "gettable total" of 168, DC got off to the worse possible start as they lost their skipper on the very first delivery of their innings.
On a wicket that was clearly aiding spinners, the Capitals needed a strong start but they ended up losing three top-order wickets, including one via run-out, and that was clincher for CSK, Warner pointed out.
Post the powerplay, the CSK spinners turned on the screws on the DC middle-order, conceding just 51 runs in 10 overs while taking 1 wicket in the process.
The DC batters were timid in their approach and Warner didn't mince his words while pointing towards that in the post-match presentation.
"Back to losing three wickets. We lost a wicket in the first over. Our opening combination is crucial. We lost a wicket to a run-out. We threw wickets away. Put too much on pressure on ourselves. Was a gettable total. To sum it up, we needed a better first six. We couldn't rotate strike. We needed to try different things but we couldn't. When you get a wide half-tracker you can't hit it to cover. We should have executed better with those wide half-trackers."
Courtesy of this defeat, Delhi are more or less knocked out from the race to the playoffs.
They will now face Punjab Kings home and away on a back-to-back basis before locking horns with CSK in the return fixture in Delhi on May 20.
