'We Still Are A Work In Progress' - India's Head Coach After Heartbreaking Loss vs AUS

The ongoing three-match ODI series against Australia has been quite an eye-opener for the India side, who came narrowly close to winning the second encounter last evening, which the visitors won by three runs.

Team India made several fundamental errors in Mumbai, where as many as six dropped catches and shoddy bowling enabled Australia to put up a stiff 259-run target, which proved too much eventually, despite Richa Ghosh's herculean effort scoring 96.

Post the match, head coach Amol Muzumdar pointed out that sloppy fielding and poor death overs bowling cost India the encounter, where the side were presented several chances to take advantage off.

As quoted by Cricbuzz, former Mumbai legend stated that India needs to work on both aspects moving forward.

Here's what Muzumdar said

"We're in the process of building it up. There's no doubt that our fielding was below par today. We dropped about six catches. It always happens in a game. Even they dropped a few. But having said that, we still are a work in progress. If we get time post this series, I'm sure we'll try to spend a lot of time on fielding and fitness. At the end of the day we can all sit and say 'oh, we missed out by three runs' but there were about 600 balls bowled in that. So we can always go back and talk about it in hindsight.

Yes, we fell short by three runs but I cannot name anyone for the defeat. It's just a collective effort. Probably just one more shot or one more stop in the field could have done the trick. That's one area where I feel we need to have a look in and improve ourselves going forward, is the death overs, whether it is batting or bowling. We'll be working hard on that."

The Indian coach also lauded the efforts of Ghosh, who slammed her career-best ODI score as well, almost bringing India to the brink of a memorable win.

The third and final ODI will be played on January 2, where India hope to deny Australia a series whitewash.
