Melbourne Renegades Women (MR-W) pulled off a fairytale finish on Sunday at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) by clinching their maiden Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) title. From finishing at the bottom of the table just a season ago to lifting the coveted trophy, it’s been one heck of a turnaround for the Renegades.
On the other hand, Brisbane Heat Women (BH-W) suffered heartbreak once again as they lost their second consecutive final.
Here’s the timeline of how MR-W vs BH-W WBBL 2024 final panned out in Melbourne.
MR-W vs BH-W Highlights: Hayley Matthews holds fort for the Renegades
The Renegades Women didn’t have the smoothest of starts. Choosing to bat first, they lost Courtney Webb for 9 in the second over. Things went from bad to worse when captain Sophie Molineux (6) and Deandra Dottin (0) departed in quick succession, leaving them in all sorts of trouble at 23/3 within four overs. But when the chips are down, the stars rise and Hayley Matthews shone the brightest.
Matthews played a stunning knock, smashing 69 off 61 deliveries. She held the innings together like glue, taking calculated risks and putting away anything loose. Georgia Wareham (21) and Naomi Stalenberg (16) chipped in to steady the ship, as Matthews made sure the Renegades crossed the 100-run mark.
MR-W vs BH-W Highlights: Knott and Parsons Trigger Renegades' Collapse
The Renegades looked primed for a big finish with Matthews going strong, but Brisbane Heat had other ideas. Charli Knott (3/28) and Grace Parsons (2/29) changed the game in the death overs, causing a dramatic collapse.
The Renegades lost six wickets for just 32 runs in the final six overs, with Matthews falling in the penultimate over while trying to clear the ropes. They eventually finished at 141/9, a fighting total, but far from comfortable.
MR-W vs BH-W Highlights: Heat Stumble in a Rain-Affected Chase
With rain cutting the game short, Brisbane Heat Women were given a revised target of 98 runs in 12 overs. However, their chase got off to a disastrous start. Grace Harris fell for a golden duck in the very first over, and Jemimah Rodrigues followed suit shortly after.
Georgia Redmayne tried to bring some stability with her cautious 16, but the Renegades bowlers, especially Matthews, Molineux and Charis Bekker, were relentless. By the halfway mark, the Heat were struggling at 37/5, and the chase looked all but over. Matthews was once again in the thick of things, picking up two vital wickets to keep Brisbane on the ropes.
MR-W vs BH-W Highlights: Jess Jonassen Fights Till The End
Amid the ruins, Jess Jonassen gave the Heat a bit of a hope. The skipper stood tall and fought hard single-handedly as she smashed 44 off just 28 balls, including five fours and a six. However, she lacked support at the other end.
Deandra Dottin and Matthews delivered clutch overs at the death, shutting down any chance of a late miracle. Brisbane finished at 90/6, falling short by seven runs as the Renegades erupted in celebration.
