Indian cricketers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad recently shared fond recollections of their experiences with the legendary MS Dhoni in a conversation uploaded on the BCCI's Twitter account.

Jaiswal and Gaikwad Discuss Learnings from Dhoni

In the video, the two young cricketers, who are currently preparing for their first Test match against West Indies in Dominica, opened up about their encounters with the former Indian captain.

The video begins with Gaikwad inquiring about Jaiswal's initial interaction with Dhoni. Jaiswal responded, recounting his awe at meeting the cricket icon for the first time. He admitted to being at a loss for words, merely managing a greeting.

The southpaw went on to express his eagerness to spend ample time with Dhoni to absorb as much knowledge as he can from the cricketing veteran.

When I met Dhoni sir for the first time, I didn't have many words, I told Hello sir, I got goosebumps & it's a blessing to see him - still I am losing words. I want to spend a lot of time with him to get lots of knowledge,” said Jaiswal.

Gaikwad, who plays for the Chennai Super Kings under Dhoni's leadership, conveyed his sense of privilege in being able to spend quality time with the seasoned campaigner when he sees other cricketers seeking the great man’s guidance after games.

I feel I very lucky and fortunate to be able to spend time with him. I always see how a lot of players go and talk to him after the games to get his experience and knowledge from him…that’s when I feel I am very lucky as I am with him for two-three months (during the IPL),” said Gaikwad.

In Gaikwad's eyes, the opportunity to spend a substantial amount of time with Dhoni during the IPL and have access to him throughout the year has been a significant advantage in his career development. The Maharashtra-based batter credited the CSK skipper for teaching him the importance of staying humble, regardless of his performance on the pitch.

Whenever I need anything throughout the year, he is always available. He has been a major factor in my career’s growth on how to stay grounded irrespective of the on-field performance,” concluded the stylish right-hander.

Jaiswal and Gaikwad's standout domestic showings and exceptional IPL seasons have led to their selection for the Indian Test team against the West Indies.

While Gaikwad is expected to warm the bench, Jaiswal is tipped to fill the void left by Cheteshwar Pujara, who has been dropped from the Test team after a disappointing performance in the WTC 2023 final.

The first Test match against the West Indies is set to commence on Wednesday, July 12.
