Riding on ten consecutive wins, India entered the 2023 World Cup final as clear favourites. However, Australia showcased extraordinary fighting spirit to pip the hosts in the all-important final and lift the coveted trophy for the record sixth time. Chasing a modest target of 241 runs, Australia got over the line easily with seven overs to spare.

Meanwhile, legendary Indian batter Virat Kohli became emotional when India were on the brink of another knockout defeat. The incident took place during the 42nd over when Australia were cruising towards the target. Sensing the inevitable defeat, Kohli looked shattered, with his eyes full of tears.

Although he controlled himself, the talismanic Indian batter was visibly distraught. Australia immediately chased the total in the very next over, with Glenn Maxwell hitting the winning runs. Travis Head played a magnificent knock, slamming 137 runs off just 120 deliveries.

Earlier, batting first, India could post only 240, as the Australian bowlers choked them with immaculate line and length. While Kohli amassed a useful 63-ball 54, KL Rahul could crawl his way to a sloth-paced 107-ball 66. The likes of Ravindra Jadeja and Suryakumar Yadav let the team down, as India finished things on a below-par note.
