Andre Russell strangled Suryakumar Yadav with a 135kph delivery during the faltering Mumbai Indians run-chase in Match 60 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season.

Employed by KKR captain Shreyas Iyer to bowl the 11th over of the innings, Russell sent down a scramble-seam ball to topple the Mumbai Indians (MI) number three in front of a roaring Eden Gardens crowd in Kolkata.

Suryakumar’s dismissal further worsened Mumbai Indians’ troubles, as they soon slipped to 92-5 while chasing a 158-run target in a 16-over rain-curtailed game.

Chasing 158 for a win, Mumbai Indians number three Suryakumar Yadav arrived to the crease in the seventh over of the innings following the dismissal of opener Ishan Kishan.

Up against a mounting asking rate, the 33-year-old struggled to pierce gaps as he hobbled his way to a sluggish 11* from his first 13 deliveries.

Just as Suryakumar was conjuring enough will to break the shackles by smacking Andre Russell on to his leg side, he ended up finding an agile Ramandeep Singh stationed at deep square leg instead.

Suryakumar Yadav’s dismissal ensured Mumbai Indians slipped to 87-3, and their precarious run-chase response soon worsened at 92-5.

Earlier in the match, hosts KKR smacked 157-7 from just 16 overs, with number three Venkatesh Iyer top-scoring in the innings.

The cricketer scored 42 runs in double-quick time (21 balls), and led KKR’s recovery through crucial partnerships with captain Shreyas Iyer and number five Nitish Rana after the early dismissals of both openers.

Rana (33 off 23 balls), Andre Russell (24 off 14 balls) and Rinku Singh (20 off 12 balls) also flourished in the backend of the KKR innings to defy the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Nuwan Thushara and Piyush Chawla.
