Steve Smith throws tantrums [Source: @cricketcomau/X.com]
In an unexpected turn, Steve Smith made a bizarre request to England fielder Brydon Carse during day three of the fifth Ashes Test. He asked the fielder to move his sunglasses, as their reflection was hampering his vision.
Smith was batting beautifully on day three, knitting 50-odd run partnerships each with Travis Head and Usman Khawaja.
The Australian captain quickly completed his half-century and put his team in the lead. However, despite being set on the crease, the sun at the SCG continued to bother him.
Steve Smith has a problem with Carse’s sunglasses
In the middle of Matthew Potts’ over, a focused Steve Smith noticed the sun reflecting off England bowler Brydon Carse’s sunglasses at mid-off. It was apparently hampering his vision.
Instead of ignoring it, Smith did what Smith does best. Wandering down the pitch, he politely asked Carse to turn his sunglasses around so the glare wouldn’t distract him.
Carse, slightly surprised but smiling, obliged and moved his sunglasses to the back of his cap. The moment was quickly picked up on the broadcast and sparked laughter in the commentary box.
Commentators shocked at Carse’s generosity
Meanwhile, Michael Vaughan in the commentary box could hardly believe what he was seeing as he believed Carse shouldn’t have agreed to Smith's request.
“That’s very nice of Brydon to do so. Don’t think there’s any regulation for the way you put on your glasses? I’ve never seen that before that in my life. Brydon Carse should just put them on. I can’t believe he’s actually said, ‘Ok, no problem’” he said.
Vaughan then joked about how other players might have reacted. “I can only imagine the late great Shane Warne at mid-off. I don’t think he’d have done it,” he added.
Former Australia batter Mike Hussey summed it up perfectly, “Expect the unexpected when Steve Smith’s in the middle.”
Australia is racing towards a big total
Meanwhile, Steve Smith is leading Australia from the front in the fifth and final Test of the Ashes 2025-26 series. He is racing towards a century, and Australia's total is well beyond 400 runs.
They’re in the lead as England finished at 384 in the first inning. Before Smith took charge, Travis Head had already set the platform with a stunning knock of 163 off 166 balls.
Notably, Australia have already won the series with a 3-1 lead. But for England, this is their chance to save their pride instead of surrendering completely.
