RCB captain and in-form opening batter Smriti Mandhana failed to sustain her prolific run with the bat against Mumbai Indians in match number nine of the ongoing WPL 2024 season. After being put into bat first, the elegant left-hander mistimed one off Mumbai Indians’ new-ball speedster Issy Wong in just the third over of the innings.

Mandhana managed to conjure just nine runs at the top of the order for her side off 11 deliveries as RCB lost their opening wicket for 14 on the board in 2.3 overs.

RCB captain Smriti Mandhana, who belted a belligerent 74 against Delhi Capitals a couple of nights ago at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, failed to sustain her prolific touch with the bat at the same venue during her faceoff against defending champions Mumbai Indians.

Turning up for her side in match number nine of the tournament, Mandhana dispatched Mumbai Indians spinner Hayley Matthews over extra cover for a boundary in the second over of the innings. Aiming to pile on her momentum the following over against Issy Wong, the seasoned Indian veteran was holed out by Nat Sciver-Brunt just outside the inner circle.

Smriti Mandhana’s untimely departure was followed by the quick dismissals of her opening partner Sophie Devine as well as number three Sabbhineni Meghana as RCB slipped to 34-3 by the end of their powerplay overs.

Under Mandhana’s leadership, the RCB unit entered the contest off the back of huge wins against UP Warriorz and Gujarat Giants. A defeat to Delhi Capitals hampered their table-topping prospects, but a win against Mumbai Indians at this stage of the tournament will catapult them back to the top of the WPL 2024 ladder.
