Smriti Mandhana is a highly popular cricketer in the world and so is the franchise she is leading in the WPL - RCB. They won the last edition of the WPL and are expected to do well in this season too. However, they were put under immense pressure in the first half of the tournament opener as Gujarat Giants carted their bowlers all over the park.
The GG skipper led the way with a swashbuckling 79 off just 37 balls and the same was expected from RCB skipper Smriti Mandhana as well. The batter started with two boundaries, but a false shot led to her downfall on the score of just 9 and RCB lost their first wicket in the second over.
RCB Under Pressure After Gardner's Special
It was a flatter and quicker delivery from 'round the wicket by off-spinner Ashleigh Gardner. The ball came in with the angle and it was pitched touch short. Mandhana was late on her shot as she somehow tries to work it towards the leg side. The ball though missed the ball and hit her on the pad as the GG players went up in the appeal, the umpire did not hesitate in raising the finger.
Smriti Mandhana took the DRS more in hope than anything else and the Ball Tracking eventually confirmed umpire's decision with three reds and the RCB skipper had to walk off in disappointment. Soon, RCB lost the other opener, Danielle Wyatt-Hodge and it is Ellyse Perry who is showing up the fight against all odds in the tournament opener.
