A spirited Scotland unit prevailed over Ireland off the last ball in match number seven of the ICC World Cup Qualifiers 2023. Michael Leask was the man of the moment for the Scots, as the all-rounder notched up the winning runs to finish at an unbeaten 91.

The significance of the victory was such, that Leask’s mistimed hit towards the boundary instantly sparked some wild celebrations within the Scotland dressing room.

Scotland, chasing 287 for a win, slumped to 122-6, and later to 152-7 in the 33rd over of their innings. However, veteran all-rounder Michael Leask kept the asking rate in check from his end of the crease and belted his way to an undefeated 91 from just 61 balls.

The 32-year-old whacked four sixes and nine boundaries, including the winning hit through an inside edge when two runs were required off the last ball of the match.

Realising the magnitude of the win, Scotland players viewing from the dressing room launched their wild celebrations, even before the ball could reach the fence.

With a win over a Test-playing nation first-up, Scotland stands at number three on the Group B points table. They will now face the UAE on June 23.

Meanwhile, Ireland’s misery worsened by the defeat, as they are yet to register their opening points of the tournament despite featuring in two games.

The ongoing ICC World Cup 2023 Qualifiers in Zimbabwe will grant its top two sides an entry into the 2023 Cricket World Cup in India, scheduled to be played later this year.
