Sri Lankan all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga's quick cameo came to a disappointing end during the third ODI between Sri Lanka and New Zealand at Eden Park, Auckland, on January 11. Hasaranga, stepping in at No. 8, aimed to add some valuable runs toward the end of Sri Lanka’s innings but was bowled out by a brilliant delivery from Kiwi pacer Matt Henry.

The dismissal took place in the 48th over when Hasaranga tried to create room to play an attacking shot. However, Henry delivered a perfect yorker that crashed into the off stump, sending Hasaranga back to the pavilion after scoring 15 runs off 9 balls. The crowd roared as the sound of timber echoed through Eden Park, marking Henry's third wicket of the day.

With Hasaranga's departure, Sri Lanka’s hopes of crossing the 300-run mark faded. The team eventually posted 290/8 in their allotted 50 overs.

Matt Henry Scripts History In ODIs

Matt Henry led the bowling attack with impressive figures of 4/52, reaching the milestone of 150 ODI wickets and becoming the second fastest New Zealand bowler to reach 150 wickets in Men's ODIs. Meanwhile, Mitchell Santner grabbed two wickets, while Nathan Smith and Michael Bracewell chipped in with one wicket each.

For Sri Lanka, they got off to a flying start after choosing to bat first. Pathum Nissanka looked in fine touch, smashing a quickfire half-century off just 31 balls. However, his innings was cut short when he retired hurt due to a hamstring issue.

Avishka Fernando struggled at the crease, managing only 17 runs. The Mendis duo — Kusal and Kamindu — steadied the ship with an 87-run partnership for the third wicket. Kusal scored 54 runs before falling, while Kamindu fell just four runs short of his fifty. Janith Liyanage’s composed knock of 53 runs helped SL recover, while lower-order contributions from Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana added crucial runs at the end.
