Rohit Sharma may not have had a great start in the first Test match against Bangladesh in Chennai, but he was undeterred by his underwhelming performance. In the second Test match in Kanpur, he unleashed a thunderous knock as soon as he stepped onto the field.
Rain played spoilsport in the second Test, affecting play on the 2nd and 3rd days. However, on the first day, Bangladesh managed to score 107 runs with 3 wickets lost in 35 overs. After the rain cleared, Bangladesh concluded their first innings with a total of 233 runs on Day 4.
Rohit Sharma's Fiery Start Against Bangladesh
In response, India's first innings began with Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal giving the team a strong start. Rohit, in particular, came out with aggressive intent, smashing 3 sixes and 1 four. However, his explosive innings were cut short when he was dismissed after scoring 23 off just 11 balls.
The turning point came in the 4th over of India's first innings when Mehidy Hasan Miraz was brought into the attack. Miraz was determined to remove the Indian skipper early, and on the fourth ball of the over, he nearly succeeded. An appeal followed, and umpire Richard Kettleborough raised his finger after a lengthy consideration.
Rohit opted for a review, as the ball had turned in sharply after pitching. It struck Rohit high on the front pad, and it appeared to be heading down the leg side. The ball-tracking replays confirmed that the impact was outside the leg stump, and the decision was reversed, allowing Rohit to survive.
Despite surviving the review, Rohit couldn’t last much longer. On the very next ball, Mehidy delivered a beautifully flighted off-break outside off-stump. Rohit planted his front leg, attempting to defend, but the ball turned sharply and stayed low, sneaking past his bat to hit the middle stump.
The Green Park Stadium fell silent as the dangerous-looking Indian skipper was bowled out. It was the end of an entertaining, albeit brief, innings.
At the time of writing, India are at 58 for 1 in 6 overs, with Jaiswal and Shubman Gill at the crease, continuing to build on the strong foundation laid by Rohit’s rapid-fire knock.
