Playing at home in Multan, Pakistan had a disastrous start against Nepal in the curtain raiser of the Asia Cup 2023 on Wednesday (August 30). After Babar Azam decided to bat, the Men in Green lost both of their openers, Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq, within the first seven overs.

While Fakhar's dismissal was fairly straightforward, Imam's wicket came as a result of an outstanding effort from Nepal's 20-year-old captain, Rohit Paudel.

After driving the first ball of the seventh over, bowled by Sompal Kami, towards mid-off, Imam ran quickly with the hope of completing a cheeky single. Considering the mid-off was charging in, the call was always risky, and the Pakistani opener paid the price after a bull’s eye throw from Paudel.

The Nepal skipper took little time before aiming towards the non-strikers’ stumps, and he was successful in breaking them. Imam put in a dive to reach the crease, but he was well short of it when the stumps were broken.

The decision went to the third-umpire, but Imam knew he was gone as soon as it broke the stumps. He started walking towards the pavilion after a struggling 14-ball five, and the big screen confirmed there was no surprise for their ardent fans either.

At the time of writing, Pakistan are batting on 37/2 after 8.4 overs, with Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan in the middle.
