India's hopes in the Champions Trophy semi-final against Australia took a hit when skipper Rohit Sharma was dismissed LBW by Cooper Connolly during the chase at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. The Indian skipper eventually got dismissed even though the wicket was apparently a plumb lbw.
At the time of writing, India is 55/2 in 10 overs, requiring 210 more runs to reach the target of 265 set by Australia. Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer are currently anchoring the innings after Gill and Rohit's fall however, the DRS wasted might be costly later in the match.
Rohit Sharma and Kohli's DRS Blunder!
The dismissal of Rohit Sharma not only cost India a crucial wicket but also saw the team waste a valuable DRS call. Connolly delivered a full-length ball angled back on the middle stump in the 7.5 over, trapping Rohit, who attempted a sweep but missed the ball.
The ball struck him low on the front pad, leading to a confident appeal. The on-field umpire promptly raised his finger, but Rohit, seemingly unsure, had a brief discussion with Virat Kohli before opting for a review at the last moment.
However, the UltraEdge confirmed no bat was involved, and ball-tracking displayed three reds, confirming Rohit’s dismissal for 28 off 29 balls.
India's Final Chances Take A Hit
The DRS call, taken after a hurried conversation between Rohit and Kohli, was wasted, leaving India with one less review for the rest of the innings. The decision proved costly as India lost not just a wicket but a crucial review as well, handing Australia a significant advantage.
Rohit’s dismissal followed Shubman Gill’s earlier wicket, who was bowled by Ben Dwarshuis for 8 runs, further pushing India onto the back foot in the chase. Australia's bowlers, particularly Connolly and Dwarshuis, have kept the pressure on with disciplined bowling, making India’s chase increasingly challenging.
