Drama unfolded at the Docklands Stadium during the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL) match between Brisbane Heat and Melbourne Renegades. Two Renegades bowlers, Will Sutherland and O'Neill were banned from bowling for stepping into the danger area repeatedly.
Why Was Will Sutherland Restricted From Bowling?
The incident took place in the 12th over when Will Sutherland, was asked to stay out of the attack by the on-field umpires. The bowler was running into the protected area of the pitch during his follow-through and after several warnings the umpire made the decisive call to remove him from the attack. Sutherland was visibly unhappy with the decision and got into a heated exchange with the umpire. The situation worsened when O'Neill, was also banned from bowling for the same offense.
Earlier in the match, Melbourne Renegades won the bat flip and opted to bowl first. Brisbane Heat started well in the powerplay with significant contribution from Jack Wood. Later on in the middle-order, Matt Renshaw laid the platform and Tom Alsop gave the innings the perfect finish with valuable contribution by scoring 42 runs off 26 balls.
What Is Danger Area In Cricket?
The protected area, or danger area, is a critical zone on the pitch where bowlers must avoid running during their follow-through. It is a central rectangle, two feet wide, beginning five feet from each popping crease. This area is important as it preserves the pitches integrity for fair play. Under the Laws of Cricket, repeated violations of this rule can result in bowlers being removed from the attack, as seen in this match.
At the time of writing, MLR need 130 runs in 79 balls with Jake Fraser-McGurk and Ollie Peake at the crease.
