India's hopes for a comeback in the first match of the five-game series against England in Hyderabad were severely dampened by the dismissal of Ravichandran Ashwin on Day 4. The dismissal came in the 64th over when debutant Tom Hartley secured his sixth wicket of the innings, sending Ashwin back to the pavilion and leaving India in a dismal position.

Ashwin fell victim to Hartley's deceptive bowling

Ashwin's exit was not just a blow to the Indian batting line-up but also proof of the extraordinary performance of England's rookie spinner Hartley. The dismissal occurred on the second ball of the over, with Ashwin stepping out in an ambitious attempt to hit across the line.

However, he completely missed the delivery, allowing England's wicketkeeper Chris Foakes to execute a swift stumping. Ashwin's departure for 28 runs off 84 balls marked a significant moment in the game, further dimming India's already fading hopes.

Hartley's remarkable journey in this match adds a compelling narrative to the day's events. Despite his two-wicket haul in the first innings, he had been expensive, conceding 131 runs in 25 overs. However, his performance in the second innings painted a vastly different picture.

India's struggles in the match were compounded by England's strong batting performance. After gaining a substantial 190-run lead, England's batsmen, led by Ollie Pope's brilliant 196 posted 420. India's response started promisingly but was quickly derailed as they lost Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill in quick succession. Wickets fell regularly thereafter, preventing India from building any significant partnerships.

India ended up losing the game by 28 runs in the end, and England have taken 1-0 lead in the five-match series as the action moves to Vizag for the second Test.
