Drama unfolded on Day 4 of the second Test between Afghanistan and Zimbabwe as Richard Ngarava pulled up with a calf injury moments before stumps, forcing the umpires to end play early due to bad light. Zimbabwe, precariously placed at 205/8, still need 73 runs to seal a dramatic win, while Afghanistan require just two wickets to secure victory.

The incident occurred with the match evenly poised. As the Afghan bowlers pressed for the final two wickets, Richard Ngarava seemingly pulled his calf, bringing the physio onto the field. Rashid Khan, the Afghan captain, was visibly irked by the timing, with his frustration evident as cameras panned on his visibly upset face.

The delay eventually allowed the umpires to call stumps due to poor light, extending the contest to a nerve-wracking Day 5.

Afghanistan Experiences Deja Vu

Rashid’s reaction sparked memories of Afghanistan’s controversial tactic in the 2024 ICC World Cup match against Bangladesh. During that game, Gulbadin Naib’s dramatic cramp and extended medical break frustrated Bangladesh’s momentum as Afghanistan edged out a win. This time, it seems the tables have turned, with Zimbabwe accused of employing similar tactics to buy time.

Series Finale Continues To Day 5 Thriller

Earlier in the day, Afghanistan set Zimbabwe a challenging target of 278, thanks to Ismat Alam’s gritty century and Rahmat Shah's 139. Zimbabwe’s chase began with promise but quickly faltered under Rashid’s spell, who claimed his fifth Test five-wicket haul. Craig Ervine (53*) stood firm as wickets tumbled around him, leaving Zimbabwe’s hopes hanging by a thread.

As the sun sets on Day 4, the stage is set for a thrilling finale on Day 5. While the first Test was a draw, both the Zims and the Afghanistan team will be hungry to seal the series finale of the two-match affair and make it 1-0.
