There is a saying in cricket “when it rains, it pours” and for Gujarat Titans, the heavens opened right when they needed calm. The final few overs of their innings in Match 9 of IPL 2025 against Mumbai Indians were nothing short of chaotic.
Rahul Tewatia Perished For Diamond Duck As Hardik Pandya Unleashed A Rocket Throw
What looked like a platform for a 220+ total suddenly saw them crashing like a deck of cards. And at the heart of it was a mix-up that will sting for a while: Rahul Tewatia getting run out without even facing a ball.
With just 12 balls left in the innings, GT sent in their finisher Rahul Tewatia. The man known for last-over miracles. The finisher. The game-changer. But cricket has its own way of turning heroes into headlines for the wrong reasons.
On the first ball of the 19th over, bowled by Deepak Chahar, Sherfane Rutherford drilled a length delivery straight to mid-off. Tewatia, eager to get going, bolted out of the non-striker’s end looking for a quick single. But Rutherford wasn’t on the same page. Realising the run wasn’t on, Tewatia turned and dashed back. Too late.
Hardik Pandya was sharp at mid-off. He swooped in, picked up the ball in one motion, and fired a bullet throw to the bowler’s end. Bang on target. Tewatia was short by a few inches. Out for a diamond duck without facing a delivery.

GT Limp To 196/8 After Bright Start
Up until the 17th over, Gujarat Titans were cruising. The crowd in Ahmedabad was buzzing. Sai Sudharsan anchored with a knock of 63 off 41 balls. Shubman Gill chipped in with a classy 38 while Jos Buttler added a fiery 39. With the stage set for a big finish, 220 looked gettable.
But from there, the wheels came off. A couple of wickets fell, dot balls crept in and the runout of Tewatia knocked the wind out of their sails. From 179/4 in 18 overs, they limped to 196/8 in 20 overs.
Now, with 197 to chase, Mumbai Indians will fancy their chances. The pitch at Narendra Modi Stadium has looked good for batting and dew could play a role later on. GT will need early wickets and hope their bowling unit steps up big time.
